Crystal Mining

Dig for Ozark quartz in a working private mine — and keep every crystal you pull from the rock.

The Ouachitas hold some of the finest quartz on earth — and a helicopter is the only graceful way in.

Lift off from Thaden Field in Bentonville and trade the highway for a forty-minute flight over ridge after forested ridge. Below you, the Ouachita Mountains run east to west — the only range in North America that does — their quartz veins formed under heat and pressure some 300 million years ago.

You set down at a private working mine where a seasoned local miner is waiting. He walks you through the geology, hands you a pick, and points you at the freshly worked tailings. Then it’s just you, the rock, and the particular thrill of brushing red clay off a clear point that no one has ever seen.

Every crystal you find is yours to keep — raw, unpolished, and pulled from the ground by your own hands. We bag your haul, fly you home, and the whole Ozark afternoon fits inside a single day.
